Tournament Information

The NSWBA runs events at the Goulburn St premises and in its affiliated bridge clubs around the state (See below for details.)

Congresses run by the NSWBA and its affiliated clubs are held throughout the year. The dates of these events are available on the Calendar.

STATE EVENTS

In 2020 State Championship events are being run by the NSWBA, the Orange Bridge Club, the Bowral Bridge Club and the Central Coast Bridge Club. Players from all clubs may play in any of the State events.

All clubs are invited to participate in the State Mixed Pairs, State Open Pairs and State Open Teams Championships and also the State Wide Pairs and State Under 100MP Pairs Championship conducted by the NSWBA each year.

EVENTS RUN BY THE NSWBA

STATE MIXED PAIRS QUALIFYING

A 2 week match-pointed pairs event Mondays 6 & 20 January. Non-mixed pairs may play in the qualifying rounds. The NSWBA will pay the entry fee to the week-end final on 23-24 May for the top 6th of the field.

INTERSTATE TEAMS SELECTION (ITS) - 2020

The NSWBA will send 4 teams to the Australian National Championships in Adelaide, 12-16 July to compete in the Open, Women's, Seniors' and Youth Interstate Teams.

The Interstate Teams Selection events run in four separate divisions - Open, Women's, Seniors' and Youth. Seniors must be born before 1/1/1960 and Youth must be born on or after 1/1/1995.

Open I.T.S.

Stage I: Mondays 3, 10 & 17 February
Stage II: Mondays 2, 9 & 16 March
Final: Saturday 21 March & Sunday 22 March

Women's I.T.S.

The Women's I.T.S. will be held over a single weekend.
Qualifying: Friday 7 February
Final:
Saturday 8 February & Sunday 9 February

Seniors' I.T.S.

The Seniors’ I.T.S. will be held over a single weekend.
Qualifying: Friday 15 May
Final:
Saturday 16 May & Sunday 17 May

Youth I.T.S.

Wednesdays 6 & 13 May, 6.30pm (2 sessions)

ITS SWISS PAIRS

Swiss Pairs with Butler scoring. Held in parallel with the Open ITS Stage II, Mondays 2, 9 & 16 March. All players are welcome.

STATE DAYTIME PAIRS

A 4 session pairs event over 2 weeks, Fridays 6 & 13 March.

CITY OF SYDNEY TEAMS

A 3 week Board-a-match teams event commencing Monday 23 March. Every team scores either 0, 1 or 2 on each board.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S PAIRS

A 2 week Matchpoint pairs event Tuesdays 14 & 21 April. Mixed pairs may enter but will be ineligible for a title.

MASTERS TEAMS

A Swiss teams event, Tuesdays 28 April & 5 May. The field will be split into three prize pools: teams containing silver and gold grandmasters, teams without silver or gold grandmasters, and teams without any grandmasters. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team in each pool.

ANC BUTLER PAIRS

A 4 week Butler pairs event commencing Monday 11 May. Winners of the Open and Women's fields will receive grants (in the form of having their entry fees paid) to attend the ANC Butler Pairs in Adelaide in July, 2020.

JOHN ARKINSTALL STATE OPEN TEAMS QUALIFYING

A 4 week teams event commencing Monday 15 June. Two teams will qualify directly to the State Finals to be held 13-15 November. Up to 3 teams will receive free entry to the Jacaranda Teams Congress on 25 October. Teams from the affiliated clubs, representing the metropolitan, outer metropolitan and country regions, also qualify for the Finals.

STATE OPEN PAIRS QUALIFYING

A 2 week match-pointed pairs event Mondays 13 & 20 July. The NSWBA will pay the entry fee to the week-end final on 21-22 November for the top 6th of the field.

GNOT NATIONAL FINAL QUALIFYING EVENT

A 5 week knock-out teams event (28 board matches) with Swiss repechage (14 board matches) commencing Monday 27 July. Two teams qualify directly to the National Final, held from 27-30 November. One seventh of the field will qualify for the GNOT Metropolitan Final to be held on 12-13 September. Gold masterpoints.

STATE MIXED TEAMS

A 4 week Swiss teams event commencing Monday 31 August. Each partnership must contain one female and one male player. Non-mixed teams may enter as non-contending teams.

STATE DAYTIME TEAMS

A 2 week teams event Fridays 4 & 11 September.

MATCHPOINT SWISS PAIRS

A 3 week Matchpointed Pairs event with matchpoints converted to VPs Mondays 12 & 26 October, 2 November.

STATE SWISS PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

A 3 week Swiss pairs event with Butler scoring commencing Monday 9 November.

SCHAUFELBERGER TEAMS

A 4 week Swiss teams event with scoring based on a combination of IMPs and board-a-match commencing Monday 30 November.

OTHER EVENTS

GRAND NATIONAL OPEN TEAMS

The Grand National Open Teams is an Australia-wide event conducted by the Australian Bridge Federation Inc (ABF). It is the only opportunity for players to earn Gold Masterpoints in their local club. The National Final will be held in Tweed Heads on 27-30 November. The NSWBA is the organising body for all regions in NSW and will send 22 teams to the finals, 7 of the teams coming from the Sydney Metropolitan region and the remaining teams from elsewhere in NSW. BRIDGE FOR BRAIN RESEARCH CHALLENGE - First week of May

All clubs are invited to participate in the 2020 Bridge for Brain Research Challenge and support Neuroscience Research Australia. The ABF has approved red masterpoints at B4s level.

TEAMS OF THREE CONGRESS - 31 May

Three players enter and randomly draw a Master player as their fourth for the day. Only simple bidding systems may be used and no Grand Masters may enter (except as team captains). The captain will play two matches with each of the team members.

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - 11-23 July

The ANC rotates around the states and territories on a 7-year cycle and in 2020 the South Australian Bridge Federation will be holding this prestigious event at the Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide. Players must be prequalified for the ANC Teams Championships. For full details, see www.abfevents.com.au/events/anc/2020/. Stage I of the Australian Butler Pairs is open entry and Gold masterpoints are awarded.
