How was the UHMP handicapping done?

Each pair’s total score was multiplied by two correction factors, one based on their masterpoint division and one based on the strength of the Local Final in which they played. These correction factors are explained below and their values can be found here.

  1. An average score for each of the four MP divisions was calculated. As expected the 0-10 group did worst, whist the 50-100 group did best. Each of these average scores was divided by 50 to give a correction factor based on a pair’s MP division. The appropriate correction factor was then applied to each pair in the field.
  2. It is harder to do well at club with 90% of players in 50-100 group than at a club with 90% of players in the 0-10 group. Therefore, a club correction factor based on the relative numbers of pairs in each MP division at a club was calculated. The appropriate club correction factor was then applied to each pair in the field.
