Finals Season!
Moving into the second half of the year there are quite a few championship Finals coming up! Here is the state of play with respect to the Grand National Open Teams and the John Arkinstall State Teams/Country Teams

GNOT: The NSWBA will send 22 teams to the GNOT National Final, with 7 of those teams from the Sydney Metropolitan region (2 directly from the NSWBA qualifying event, 1 directly from the NSBC qualifying event and 4 from the Sydney Metropolitan final).
The direct qualifying teams are:
  • Nick Jacob - Fraser Rew - Ella Jacob - Lakshmi Sunderasan - Matt Smith - Jamie Thompson (NSWBA)
  • Mike Hughes - David Weston - Bruce Neill - Kim Morrison - Julian Foster (NSWBA)
  • Wayne Zhu - Peter Jeffery - Yumin Li - Yixiang Zhang - Wei Zhang (NSBC)
The GNOT Metropolitan Final will be held on 17-18 September at NSWBA. If you didn't manage to qualify from a club event to play in this, you may also contact the organiser Fraser Rew for direct entry.

The Country Regional Finals, from which 15 teams will be selected, are currently in progress. Please follow the interim results on the NSWBA website
State Teams: Clubs from the Sydney region that have not yet run their club qualifying events still have enough time to do so and thus be able to send a representative team to the Metropolitan Final on 16th October. Also note that players who miss out via the club qualifying event can enter directly to play in the Jacaranda Teams being held in parallel.

Clubs from regional NSW have been running club and zonal qualifying events - the Northern Zone and the Outer Metropolitan Zone have chosen teams to advance to the State Final, while events in other zones are still in progress.
Victories at the ANC

NSW did extremely well in the 2022 Interstate Teams competition, held in Adelaide in early July.

The Open, Women's and Seniors teams all won their events. The Youth was in the hunt with one match to go but suffered a loss to finish third.

It was an exciting last 12 boards in most of the matches: the Open team withstood a surging Victoria to win by 4 imps; the Women's team was just 1 imp ahead at that point but then quickened the pace to win by 17 imps; and the Seniors team held off a fast-finishing ACT team to win by 9 imps.

The presentation stage was a sea of blue as our teams accepted their trophies in their State jackets.

Congratulations to all of the teams:

  • Open: Liam Milne, Sophie Ashton, Tony Nunn, Paul Dalley, Wayne Zhu, Simon Zhang, David Fryda (NPC)
  • Women: Nazife Bashar, Kinga Moses, Rena Kaplan, Giselle Mundell, Avril Zets, Helena Dawson, Marcia Scudder (NPC)

For players
To better understand situations that arise when a director is called, Matthew McManus has explained several of them in detail, together with the reasons behind the rulings. His articles are written from the perspective of players - you may find them helpful in your quest to be a better congress player. Review his columns here >
CONGRESS PSYCHE REGISTER
The NSWBA has established a central psyche register for all congresses held in NSW.

The laws permit players to deviate from their systemic agreements so long as the partner of the player who does so has no greater reason to be aware of this deviation than the opponents. Once your partnership has a history of deviating from its agreements in a certain situation you are required to inform your opponents of this tendency.

If you feel that your opponents have psyched against you, please email details of the hand to the psyche register – no action will be taken against players who are reported to the psyche register but once a pair has multiple entries in the psyche register, congress directors will be informed so that they are aware of this history when making their rulings.

A form which can be used for submissions is available HERE.
