Feeling the freedom
The month of May looks much busier than any time in the last quarter, evidence of both the confidence of event organisers and the willingness (or even the possibility!) of players to travel to congresses. Face-to-face congresses have come alive, while online events continue to explore the borderless boundaries of bridge and bring new experiences to our players.
Clubs usually warm their players up with qualifying events and send representatives to the State Mixed Pairs Championships in May. If your local club didn't manage to run qualifying event, take the opportunity to participate in the NSWBA Direct Qualifying Event on RealBridge over 2 Monday nights on 2nd and 9th May! Please enter via MyABF.

The State Mixed Pairs Championships on 28th - 29th May also accepts direct entry of mixed pairs. Please find details and enter via NSWBA website. A one-day congress, the Autumn Swiss Pairs, will be running parallel to the Finals on Sunday 29th May and is open to all, regardless of gender. Please enter via MyABF.
Now here is a brand new tournament, brought to you by the NSWBA! The NSW Online Pairs League is open to all bridge players, with separate divisions for players at every level. It is particularly aimed at non-metropolitan players and will be played on the RealBridge platform. We plan to start the full-fledged competition on 7th July. Meanwhile, there is a trial in the form of four 12-board matches, commencing Thursday 28th April at 7.30pm. This will be one match per week, separate NS & EW fields, scored as cross IMPs. Registration fee $5 per player. Please enter via MyABF. Get in on the ground floor for this event!
The NSWBA Monday Night Championships will continue to run on RealBridge. After the Mixed Pairs Qualifying, the next Monday Night event is the NSWBA ANC Butler Pairs over 4 Monday Nights from 16th May - 6th June 2022. Please enter via MyABF.
After two stages of online selection events, the Final of the Open Interstate Team Selection will be held face-to-face at the NSWBA clubrooms on 7th - 8th May.

The Women's Team has been chosen and will nominate their Captain once the Open Team is selected. The Youth Interstate Team Selection will be held face-to-face over 2 Wednesday nights on 27th April and 4th May, please enter via NSWBA website. The Seniors' Team will be also be selected at the NSWBA clubrooms over the weekend from 20th - 22nd May. Please find the details and enter via MyABF.

To better understand situations that arise when a director is called, Matthew McManus has explained several of them in detail, together with the reasons behind the rulings. His articles are written from the perspective of players – you may find them helpful in your quest to be a better congress player. Review his columns here >
CONGRESS PSYCHE REGISTER
The NSWBA has established a central psyche register for all congresses held in NSW.

The laws permit players to deviate from their systemic agreements so long as the partner of the player who does so has no greater reason to be aware of this deviation than the opponents. Once your partnership has a history of deviating from its agreements in a certain situation you are required to inform your opponents of this tendency.

If you feel that your opponents have psyched against you, please email details of the hand to the psyche register – no action will be taken against players who are reported to the psyche register but once a pair has multiple entries in the psyche register, congress directors will be informed so that they are aware of this history when making their rulings.

A form which can be used for submissions is available HERE.
