2017 Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the NSWBA was held at the NSWBA premises on Wednesday December 20, 2017.

Richard Douglas was elected chairman unopposed as were the 6 positions for councillors: Julian Foster, John Scudder, Warren Lazer, Richard Lock, Rob Ward and Agnes Levine.

The 4 Zonal Councillors are Carol Sheldrake (Sydney Metropolitan), Alan Bustany (Outer Sydney Metropolitan), Kaye Hart (South & West Country) and Bruce Tier (Northern Country).

The motion relating to transactions for the premises to insert clause 8a to the constitution was not passed. The motion relating to the appointment of Secretary to amend clause 15 was passed.

Subsequent to the meeting the council has appointed Julian Foster to the vacant Treasurer position and John McIlrath as an ordinary councillor.


2017 Under 100MP Results

The results for the 2017 Under 100MP Championships have been finalised. Congratulations to Barrie Prior and Brian Goldman from Maitland who were the winners on handicap and to the non-handicap winners Marieta Borthwick and Heidi Colenbrander from Peninsula Bridge Club.

State Novice and Restricted Teams

The NSW State Novice and Restricted Teams Championships were held at the Illawarra Bridge Associaiotn on November 4-5. 16 teams competed in the Novice section and 9 in the Restricted. The winners of the Novice teams were Sara Lynch, David Num, Michael and Louise Brassil. The winners of the Restricted Teams were Hans Van Weeren, Peter Clarke, Jeff Conroy and Jill Blenkey.

Ethics and Discipline at NSW Congresses

The NSWBA will be introducing a set of Congress Disciplinary Regulations at the start of 2018. All congress players will be subject to these regulations.

All players are invited to make submissions and suggestions regarding these draft regulations by email to before 20th November.


2017 Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the NSWBA will be held at the NSWBA premises on Wednesday December 20, 2017 commencing at 6:30pm. This is your opportunity to have your say and make suggestions or to simply congratulate the outgoing Council.

There will be two motions to amend the Constitution.

Australia v Indonesia Youth Test Match

Australia and Indonesia have agreed to hold an inaugural Youth test match from 11 – 12 December 2017 in Jakarta, Indonesia. More details are on the ABF Website.

The match will be broadcast on BBO commencing at 2.00pm.

2018 Commonwealth Nations Bridge Championship

NSW has been invited to send a team to participate as a transnational team in the 5th Commonwealth Nations Bridge Championship to be held at Broadbeach on 14-18 February, 2018. The selection for this team will be made via a teams event on December 16-17 at the NSWBA.

2017 Interstate Teams

Congratulations to all the NSW State teams for the best NSW performance at the Australian National Championships in many years.

In fact we were within 2 imps of a clean sweep! All 4 teams qualified for the finals. The Women's, Seniors and Youth teams all won their division and the Open came about as close as possible getting pipped by South Australia in their final by just 1.1 imps. Well done to all and good luck to all NSW players in the Butler events this week.

2017 ABDA Seminar

The Australian Bridge Directors' Association (ABDA) will be holding their 2017 workshop/seminar at the North Shore BC in Willoughby from Saturday 5th August (9:30am) to Sunday 6th August. A major focus will be the new laws which come into effect on August 1. The seminar is open to all but limited to the first 120 paid participants, with preference given to current ABDA financial members.

2017 State Individual

The State Individual will be held at the NSWBA on Saturday 5 August commencing at 10am. This is a matchpointed pairs event in which all competitors play with many different partners. Players of all standards are invited to participate in this fun day.

Practice opportunities for our ANC teams
  • Each pair in the four NSW ANC teams this year is being offered free entry to any one of the three events at the North Shore Super Congress being held at Club Willoughby from Fri 30th June - Sun 2nd July (swiss teams on Fri and Sun, swiss pairs on Sat). Team captains are contacting the players.

    The NSWBA thanks North Shore Bridge Club for this offer to help our State representatives get more practice before they head to Canberra.

State Novice and Restricted Pairs

The Southern Highlands Bridge Club on behalf of the NSWBA invites players with fewer than 300 masterpoints as at 1 January, 2017 to play in the the State Novice and Restricted Pairs Championship to be held on April 29-30 at the Highlands Golf Club, Mittagong.

Generous cash prizes in both sections and in addition first place getters in the Restricted section will receive a subsidy from the ABF to assist with the cost of attending and free entry to the ANC Restricted Butler Pairs in Canberra on 22-23 July, 2017.

2017 Seniors' Interstate Team Selection

The Seniors' Interstate Team Selection (SITS) which will select the Senior team to represent NSW at the ANC in Canberra in July is open to all players born before 1st January 1959 who are permanent residents of NSW or who are bona fide members of a club affiliated with the NSWBA. However, all entrants must be contending, i.e. all entrants declare their availability to represent NSW at the Canberra ANC. Country players may apply for subsidies.

The SITS Qualifier will run on a Sunday April 9 at the NSWBA premises, the final on April 22-23.

2017 Women's Interstate Team Selection

The Women's Interstate Team Selection (WITS) to select the team to represent NSW at the ANC in Canberra in July will be held over a single weekend on February 4-5. All NSW women players are invited to play but by so doing they declare themselves available for the final and for the ANC.

Subsidies for country players are available.
